The Namib Desert (also known as the "Living Desert") is reputedly the oldest desert in the world, and has a highly developed but exceptionally sensitive ecology. Rainfall averages about 50mm per year, and in many parts only the coastal fog provides sufficient moisture for many plants and animals to survive. The Namib-Naukluft Park is one of the largest conservation areas in Africa, with a total area of approximately 50 000 square km (about five times the size of Kruger National Park, and twice the size of Etosha). Sossusvlei is one of the most photographed landscapes in Namibia, with its huge star-shaped sand-dunes, the highest in the world, rising well over 300 m above the clay pans below. Sesriem Canyon is a deep gorge approx. 1km long, forming the gateway to the Tsauchab Valley and Sossusvlei salt pans. The Namib Desert and Sossusvlei are among the highlights of the following tours:
