The Makgadikgadi Pans, comprising the largest
known saltpans in the world and covering an area of over 12 000 square km, are
all that remains of a vast lake that once covered a large part of Botswana. It
is a place of unique isolation; completely dry and barren in the winter
seasons, but the focal point of migratory game and birdlife during the wet
season. Much of Makgadikgadi Pan also comprises large areas covered in short
sweet grasses attracting some interesting plains game and predators during the
wet season. The pans are considered absolutely treacherous for vehicles, even
when appearing nice and safe, and many vehicles have been lost or abandoned.
The
Makgadikgadi Pans feature in the itinerary of the following
