A microcosm of South Africa, KwaZulu Natal boasts "beaches, bergs, bush and battlefields". The vertical basalt cliffs of the Drakensberg massif are considered one of South Africa's most magnificent spectacles, towering almost 2000 m above the coastal plains below. The "berg" provides exceptional hiking opportunities, and is one of the country's most popular leisure destinations. This area also contains a veritable treasure trove of San (Bushman) rock art, probably one of the highest densities of this unique art form over a large area known. Most of these treasures are well protected, and specialist guides are available to share some of these precious items with us. The 328 000 ha St. Lucia Wetlands Park was proclaimed a World Heritage Site in 1999. The park boasts 280 km of coastline, and the estuary, almost 85 km long, contains over 1000 hippos, thousands of Nile crocodiles, 114 fish species (including sharks), and over 500 bird species. A myriad of game lodges occupy this area, considered to be one of the best game viewing areas in South Africa, particularly during the winter months. Our tours often include visits to the famous battlefields of Isandlwana and Rourke's Drift, names synonymous with bravery, treachery, heroism and the horrors of war. We often spend the day sharing the history of those times with a passionate raconteur whose knowledge of the area is exceptional, and enjoy lunch with the ghosts of the dead peering at us from every stone. Other Battlefields destinations include Blood River and Spioenkop. The following tours include visits to various attractions in KwaZulu Natal in the itinerary:
