The 2-million hectare Kruger National Park is
considered South Africa's best known and most important game reserve, a huge
expanse of pristine African bushveld, boasting almost 150 species of mammal
(including, of course, the famed Big-5), about 500 species of bird, and a huge
variety of reptiles and other creatures. The southern sections of Kruger
compromise a variety of eco-systems ranging from fairly open savanna to dense
thicket, and offer exceptionally good game viewing. The central part of Kruger
tends to have more open bushveld than the southern section, and the potential
for sighting big game along the rivers is exceptional. Its more open habitat is
ideal for large herds of buffalo and plains game, as well as white rhino and
the illusive cheetah.
