Etosha is one of the largest game reserves in Africa, currently covering an area of 22 270 square km, containing approximately 340 bird and 114 mammal species, including several rare and endangered species (like the black rhino, black-faced impala and cheetah). Other game species often found include lion, hyena, leopard, giraffe, numerous antelope species and a host of smaller mammals and reptiles. Its most important geological feature is the Etosha Pan, a vast depression covering an area of approximately 5 000 square km. Millions of flamingos gather on the salt-pans during the rainy seasons. Etosha provides fantastic photographic and bird-watching opportunities, and is one of the most sought-after wildlife destinations in Southern Africa.
